Bowood House Hotel Review, Wiltshire

Publish date: 2024-09-03

The 43-room Bowood Hotel occupies a rendered, modern building that was purpose built and is set a little way away from Bowood House. Sadly, it is not nearly as handsome as the house, though the hotel does offer fireplaces in winter and terraces in summer that look onto parkland where deer graze.

Most of Bowood House itself was demolished in the 1950s, though the Georgian “little house” remains and is free for hotel guests to visit. The orangery has arched windows and a wonderful aspect, looking across a sweep of parkland towards the lake. Inside, guests can visit the chapel, library and halls, all of which contain period furniture.

The hotel’s spa offers guests the chance to be pampered, while gardeners won’t want to miss the blooming of Bowood’s woodland Rhododendron trail, which opens in early May. In summer, vintage rose bushes pop with colour among stone balustrades in the terraced gardens, while families enjoy Bowood’s adventure playground year-round, with its high walkways, super-tall slides and pirate ship climbing frame.
